Kasper Dalgaard  Abstract: One fascinating aspect of the rich literary production of antiquity is the freedom with which religious figures were rewritten and the frequency with which this was done. Such rewritings often focus on redefining or enhancing the stars of Hebrew Scripture—primarily the usual suspects, such as Adam, Noah, and Abraham. Yet relatively insignificant characters also had tumultuous literary afterlives. An example of this is the king-priest Melchizedek. While his origins are shrouded in mystery, the multitude of rewritings using this particular figure reveals his importance for later times; Melchizedek was at times described as a member of the elite club of mediatorial figures—and at others times as an altogether too human madman.
